Welcoming our newest member
Every month our Influencing Committee meets to discuss CREATE’s advocacy, our goals, and ways for us to make an impact in changing the care system. Young people are a core part of the Influencing Committee, as their voices drive everything we do! We’d like to welcome our newest Young Consultant member of the Committee – Kathleen! We can’t wait to work together and see what we can achieve.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi everyone! My name is Kathleen and I’m the new Young Consultant on the National Influencing Committee. I’m from Western Australia and have a foster care experience. I’m currently studying community services and do volunteer foster care/youth advocacy work.
What issues are you most passionate about in the care system?
It’s hard to choose one. I’m passionate about so many different areas of out-of-home care. However, I do find young people’s mental health and transitional/residential care to be of great importance to me.
How did you get involved with CREATE?
I had been a member while in care not even realising! Last year I decided I really want to be the support I wish I had. One of my youth workers highly recommended engaging with Create and that it would be perfect for my goals. I started attending YAG’s, then completed my speak up training within a few months and gradually volunteered for more Young Consultant jobs whenever I had free time.
If you could change one thing in the care system, what would it be?
More supports for children/young people in residential homes and rural areas.
What are you looking forward to about being on the Influencing Committee?
A chance to connect with more children, young people and their families while also giving them a voice!
Fun fact about yourself?
I’m a young parent to my beautiful daughter! In my spare time I enjoy painting, collecting music albums and relaxing! (all about that self-care hehe).
