WA’s, Jett on snapping stigma and continuing his advocacy

My name is Jett, I grew up in southern Western Australia. I’m 21-years-old, I froth sport, soccer being my main one. I have completed studies in computing, government, nature conservation, youth work and community service.

What’s been your experience with ‘stigma’ in out-of-home care?

A stigma that I had faced while being a person from out-of-home care was that I was always up to mischief and I was a bad influence on my friends.

I overcame this stigma by building a very positive image of myself with my friends family and the people around me.

What advice would you give to other young people facing negative attitudes because of their care experience?

What you have gone through, having a care experience, means you are stronger and more diligent and even genuinely more amazing than the average person.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to another young person in care?

You shouldn’t feel like an outcast, there are more people in this world who are just like you than you would think.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully running my own organisation that specialises in providing support and stability to people in care and with people with a care experience.

Lastly, what’s one thing you wish you could change about the care system?

The lack of lived experience peer roles.
