Supporting LGBTQIA+ young people

CREATE has been working for many years with LGBTQIA+ children and young people with a care experience.  We want to see a care system that is respectful of diversity, and actively inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community.

CREATE was a passionate supporter of the ‘YES’ campaign in the National Same Sex Marriage Survey in 2017 and continues to advocate for all children and young people to be supported and affirmed in their identity and to be surrounded by people who support them.

“Regardless of how we all voted, overwhelmingly a resounding YES vote to marriage equality happened this morning. Many tears have been shed and for those affected directly their lives will change”. –  Jacqui Reed, CREATE’s CEO at the time.

LGBTQIA+ young people have told CREATE they sometimes face challenges regarding their identity whilst in care. One issue identified was that carers and workers do not always have the knowledge or skills to properly support LGBTQIA+ young people in their care.

Our team in Victoria developed a video and poster to assist those caring for and working with LGBTQIA+ children and young people. It outlines the Do’s and Don’ts of supporting LGBTQIA+ young people.

Insights from Youth Advisory Groups (YAGs)

We asked young people around the country at CREATE YAGs how we can better show up for LGBTQIA+ youth. Here’s what they had to say.

Take the time to learn

“I think it is something that everyone needs to learn about.”

“[Don’t be afraid of] asking the young person what they identify as.”

“All carers in all parts of the system… should go through a rainbow community training day, so they can learn. They should be assessed before in this area. There is no point putting a young person in a situation where they will not be accepted.”

Be supportive

“Have a person they could talk to if they are being bullied or judged.”

“Have a pamphlet that contains counsellors [that understand] rainbow identity.”

Ways CREATE can improve

“[CREATE should] include female, male, non-binary, transgender, queer in the Individual Needs Assessment [form].”

“When you [CREATE] have stalls, you could have information about how to support rainbow young people.”
