NSW Youth Week Wrap Up

Written on April 11, 2017

Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives, and create and enjoy activities and events. This year, CREATE in NSW attended two community events to spread the word about CREATE and meet lots of amazing young people!

Youth Homelessness Matters Day

On Wednesday, Hope, Deirdre, and Dan set up a stall and represented CREATE at University of Technology Sydney for a Youth Homelessness Matters day event put on by Yfoundations. Powerful stories by young people describing their experience of being homeless was paralleled by shocking statistics surrounding youth homelessness and the lack of support within NSW and Australia more broadly. The event was put on by Yfoundations to promote the launch of their position paper on youth homelessness and the need for better support in education and employment. Andrew Johnson, the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People spoke as well, re-affirming much that was said and highlighting issues surrounding homelessness that need to be addressed by the government and service organisations. After the speeches, CREATE staff were able to speak with other organisations and discuss how they can better link up services to support vulnerable youth.

Penrith Youth Week Event

On Thursday, Hope, Deirdre, and Dan represented CREATE at a Youth Week event in Penrith that focused on what home means to young people. The mayor of Penrith, John Thain, opened up the event by thanking all those that had put the event together to demonstrate their support for young people. The speeches were followed by a variety of musical acts by young people from the community. CREATE were able to spread the word about our programs and services, and other organisations at the event expressed interest in working with CREATE in the future. Valuable connections were made that will allow CREATE to connect with more young people with an out-of-home care experience.
