Go Your Own Way Kits: Coming Soon
CREATE has revamped the Go Your Own Way workbook and the Kit using the words from the young people who took part in the Go Your Own Way: CREATE’s resource for young people transitioning from care in Australia: An evaluation research. While around half of the people survey thought the kits did not need any changes, others had some great ideas that might make the Kit better including a bigger USB, more fun stuff in the kit and quotes from young people who had gone through the process.
So in CREATE style – young people asked for it and we did it!
The GYOW kit has been revamped and updated to include these changes:
- more information on important services, like Aftercare services;
- a new bigger USB with loads of space;
- the workbook has been given a revamped look and made smaller in size to fit into bags;
- more notes pages to encourage people to write down what they need in multiple places;
- quotes, tips and hints from young people who have already transitioned from care throughout the work book to share a young person’s perspective; and
- a frisbee!
CREATE will start shipping these kits very soon around Australia and depending upon where you live it might be shipped directly to you or in some areas your caseworker will give you a copy. If YOU are turning 17 years this year, please contact your caseworker to talk about getting your copy of the GYOW Kit.
Based on the evaluation of the GYOW project, CREATE has been funded to implement the TransUP pilot project as funded by the Queensland, Victorian, Northern Territory and Tasmanian Governments, and we are working closely with other states who are keen as well. The aim of TransUP is to ensure that as many kits are distributed to eligible young people in QLD, NT, VIC and TAS so that more young people are prepared and supported to transition to independence.
For young people aged 17 (and 16 in QLD) in these states and territories, a CREATE team member will be contacting these young people, to let them know about the GYOW kits, get their permission to send them a kit, and to provide links and referrals to information and support should they require it. Between two and six months later a CREATE team member will contact the young person again to ensure the kit was received, ask how they are going with it and check in to see if they have any questions about the kit and their transition to independence more broadly.
If you have any questions about the GYOW Kit, the TransUP process or CREATE please call your local CREATE Office on 1800 655 105.
