When Bree became a young teenage mother, she was judged before she was even given a chance. The Department told her she wouldn’t be a capable parent because of her care experience. Instead of accepting that narrative, Bree chose to prove them wrong through the way she fiercely loves and protects her children.

"I’ve gone through domestic violence and financial abuse in the past but I’ve always protected them [my kids] no matter what."

When we asked Bree how she coped with the stigma of being a young parent, she said she was committed to changing minds and proving people wrong. Bree passionately advocates that,

"It’s not the young person’s fault - at most times it’s due to family circumstances and struggles."

No questions about it - growing up in care is not easy! Disruptions to friendships and schooling and upheaval with moving around are just the tip of the iceberg for challenges kids face in care. We asked Bree one way that people could make life easier for young people in care and her message was simple:

"By not underestimating them and not making more challenges for them. Instead supporting them with what they are going through."

Bree’s care experience has left a mark. She says it’s shaped her into the person she is today.

"It’s made me resilient, teaching me to know what level to expect of respect from others and how to get myself out of difficult situations."

What does life after care look like for Bree?

Bree has shared the exciting news that she’s engaged to be married and her family is growing.

"I’m now engaged and expecting my third child with a guy I’ve been with for 2 years and who treats me right."

In the near future, Bree dreams of becoming a childhood educator and then going on to complete nursing to help children going through the care system. She says she wants to be someone that children and young people can trust.

"Kids in care could change the whole world if they had the chance to - never underestimate kids in the care system or that have had a care experience."
